Hair Care While Travel

How to Protect Your Hair When You’re Traveling?

When you travel, it can be difficult to go through your normal skin & hair care routine. However, before you despair, you should know that there are certain measures you can take, to protect your hair when you’re traveling. We have taken the liberty of gathering a few tips and tricks so that you learn how to maintain your hair and ensure that it looks good at all times. No matter where you find yourself, follow our suggestions, and you will be the envy of everyone else.

#1 Apply a coat of oil to your hair before diving into the ocean

Salt water can do quite a lot of damage to the hair, especially if the exposure is prolonged and/or frequent. If you want to protect your hair against this kind of damage, it is recommended to apply a coat of oil before diving into the water. You can use coconut oil, olive oil or any oil for that matter; also, you can use your regular conditioner for the same purposes. This will prevent the hair from absorbing the salt water, reducing the risk of excess dryness. All you have to do is wash the hair with your regular shampoo.

#2 Just because a product is free, this does not mean you should use it

Each hotel has its brand of free hair supplies, offered complimentary with your stay. However, more often than not, these are not of the best quality, and it is for the best to avoid using them. When it comes to summer hair hacks, keep that in mind – always try to determine the quality of a hair product before using it. And, remember, just because a product is free, this does not mean you should use it.

#3 Carry a good shampoo with you

Whether you are a light traveler or the kind that carries an entire house, you need one good hair product that will allow you to keep your hair beautiful and healthy at the same time. This can be a quality shampoo, one that suits your hair type; you can opt for a product that can condition the hair as well, thus hitting two birds with one stone. If you suffer from excess dryness, a hair treatment or conditioner might be more important. Depending on the area to which you are traveling, you might also want to consider a dry shampoo. This can restore the healthy-looking appearance of the hair, even when water is scarcely available.

#4 Brush your hair, no matter where you are

Brushing your hair might not seem like such a big deal when you are in the jungle, but, in reality, it is. When you forget to brush your hair, you are causing a lot of damage. This is because your hair will get tangled, becoming more prone to breakage. Use a small comb or a folding brush, brushing your hair at least once a day. You can also brush it while you take a shower, using a comb with large teeth – this will prevent knot-forming and your hair from becoming frizzy.

#5 The hair needs protection from the sun as well

If you plan on spending a lot of time in the sun, you need to ensure the same level of protection for both your skin and hair. You can use a broad-rim hat or a headscarf made from a lightweight material. The most important thing is that you create a protective barrier, reducing the risk of damage. UV protection sprays are also available for the hair so that you can give those a try as well. And, remember, the UV rays can cause damage even when it is cloudy outside (as they penetrate through the clouds). This is, without a doubt, one of the most important hair care tips and tricks to remember and take into consideration.

#6 Shorter hair is always easier to maintain

You might not be interested in cutting your hair but, sometimes, it is one of the best options to consider. This is because shorter hair is easier to manage, especially if you travel a lot and to areas where hair care is a little bit more difficult. If you opt for a shorter hairstyle, keep in mind that your hair will become dry faster. Moreover, you do not have to worry about brushing or the need to wash it just as often. It is easy maintenance, simply said, no matter where you decide to travel to.

These are some of the best measures you can consider when it comes to protecting your hair during your travels. Make sure to give all of these a try and see how they work in your case.

On my last trip I actually forgot to bring all of my hot tools! I ended up braiding it the entire week so I would at least have some nice waves lol.

I have done same in my last trip Rina. To get natural waves just do braiding and spray it. Set for day or two 😀

I agree with you – I never use the free shampoo or hair products in hotels. I always make sure to bring my own!
